When to send out save the date cards and invites?

We have set a date a year from now for our wedding. We have already set the date and I have let some friends know when it is. Everyone has really appreciated knowing the date so far in advance because we have a lot of friends with REALLY busy schedules that have a hard time getting off work, and we also have family that will be traveling. Knowing that people have appreciated knowing this far ahead so far, when is a good time to send out Save the Date cards? I know I always like knowing early.
